As such, the card features in many competitive Constructed decks across multiple formats

Mad Hatter, Gracious Host Emerald and Ruby offers a fair amount of complexity but not much competitive value

Here the lifelink is the icing on the cake, especially if you can use its boast ability more than once a turn

The lifelink keyword itself was previewed in Future Sight and was only fully introduced in the following set, Tenth Edition
