Also in 2021, a new trial launched by the University of East Anglia, and funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), saw vaping starter kits being given to people who smoked when they attended hospital emergency departments.[lxxii] This initiative followed updated evidence from the Cochrane Review, led by the University of Oxford, which showed that nicotine vapes were more effective than NRT in helping people to stop smoking for at least six months.[lxxiii] That year also saw another NIHR-funded study investigate whether vapes could help people experiencing homelessness to quit smoking
